Public hearing

Residents south of Powell River who have property in the proposed Myrtle Pond zoning bylaw area have an opportunity to attend a second public hearing. Powell River Regional District held a public hearing on April 20 about the proposed bylaw. As a result of comments received at the hearing, the regional board made some changes to the proposed bylaw. The changes apply to two properties, one in the commercial recreation zone and the other in the multi-family residential three zone.

The purpose of the zoning bylaw is to ensure that Myrtle Pond water system users have sufficient, sustained quantities of high-quality water for domestic and commercial recreation purposes by restricting density levels and the types of land uses permitted within the service area.

The public hearing has been delegated to Electoral Area B Director Stan Gisborne. It will take place at 7 pm on Wednesday, July 20 at Myrtle Point Golf Club, 2865 McCausland Road.

A copy of the bylaw and the amendments are available on the regional district’s website.

Budget squeeze

School District 47 secretary-treasurer Steve Hopkins presented the 2011/2012 preliminary budget at the June Board of Education meeting.

The budget predicts that funding will be down $400,000 from the 2010/2011 school year for a total of just over $23 million. Hopkins explained that this is based on conservative estimates and that he expects the amended budget to be closer to last year’s numbers.

The budget projects a total of 12 school-based administrators, down from 13 last year, and 121 full-time teachers, down two from 2010/2011. All other service and support levels are comparable to previous years, aside from support service assistant hours which are projected to diminish based on the expected number of students with special needs.
