Volunteers from aid agencies are asking the public to open their wallets and hearts to help Filipinos affected by super Typhoon Haiyan.

The typhoon, one of the strongest storms reported, gusted with wind speeds of over 300 kilometres per hour. It cut a swath of destruction and desperation through the Philippines last weekend.

The federal government has deployed disaster teams and promised up to $5 million in aid and is matching donations. In addition, the BC government will match up to $300,000 in donations made by BC residents.

Cash donations to the Canadian Red Cross Society can be made at all branches of BC Liquor Stores. Donors who require tax receipts can donate directly by contacting the Red Cross at Powell River General Hospital 604.485.3211.
