Youth gain political experience

BC Youth Parliament (BCYP) is looking for residents aged 16 to 21 to take part in projects to benefit youth of the province.

BCYP has space for 95 youth, who would commit to visiting the BC Legislature Victoria between Boxing Day and New Years’ Day to debate important service projects and put those plans in place in 2015.

For the next three weeks, BCYP is calling on community and youth leaders across the province to nominate exceptional young people to take part in this important opportunity.

“BCYP is education and community service in action,” said Darya Ali, premier for the upcoming year of BCYP, in a press release.

“We’re looking for young people who want to learn more about our system of government, make life-long friends, and take part in projects that benefit our province’s youth.

“We’re asking community leaders, elected officials, and others to think about young people who’d be great members of this organization and make sure those youth are aware of this opportunity.”

BCYP is a non-partisan, non-denominational, non-profit service organization. It plans, fundraises for, and puts in place service projects that help improve the lives of young people.

These include group community service events, partnerships with community service organizations, regional model parliaments, and individual youth volunteer projects.

BCYP members spend time every year to debate and vote on the organization’s proposed activities and issues of local, national, and international importance. All members sit as independents, and are free to vote according to their conscience on the issues.

Potential BCYP members will be residents of the province for the past year; able to commit to a year’s worth of service; and interested in learning more about how a democratic system works.

More information and membership applications are available online. This year’s application deadline is October 29.

BCYP is sponsored by the Youth Parliament of BC Alumni Society, a registered, non-profit organization composed of past members.

Transportation survey

BC ministry of transportation and infrastructure announced in a press release it is looking for public feedback on transportation priorities for the province.

As part of its “BC on the Move” 10-year provincial transportation plan, the government invites residents to share their ideas to help prioritize future improvements to the transportation network.

A discussion guide is available online. It includes an overview of BC’s transportation network, an outline of accomplishments and highlights of strategies moving forward.

Public engagement opens on Tuesday, October 14, and feedback will be received until 4 pm Friday, December 12.

Input gathered from this province-wide engagement will be considered along with technical information and input from key stakeholders. Stakeholder meetings started in early September.
