Spokesperson Doug Smith, Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department, announced first stage burning restrictions for the island Saturday, May 23.
Effective immediately backyard burning and burn barrels are prohibited on the island, but campfires, smaller than 0.5 metres tall and in diameter, are still allowed at this point.
Smith said that when the dry weather arrives, a total fire ban will be called. “Chainsaw and gas lawnmower use will be extremely dangerous at this time because of the sparks they create,” he said. “If your grass is long, please cut it before the total fire ban.”
Before lighting a campfire, the chief is asking the public to check the wind forecast. If during the course of the fire the wind picks up and sparks and flames go sideways toward combustibles, Smith said the fire must be put out immediately. He added that people are to have sufficient water on hand to put the fire out and not leave fires unattended.
