Powell River Regional District directors have passed the initial readings of two bylaws that will allow a wellness centre to relocate on Traffe Road.
Directors approved the first and second readings of an Electoral Area B official community plan (OCP) amendment and a Traffe Road zoning bylaw amendment at a recent board meeting. The OCP amendment re-designates a property known as Pebble Beach Farm from Suburban Residential to Institutional and rezones the property from Suburban Residential to Institutional One.
Dr. Jacques du Toit is proposing to develop a private health care facility on the 10-acre parcel. The proposed 30-bed facility would eventually re-house the Seaside Wellness Centre for Women, an addiction treatment facility du Toit established in a renovated residential home on Traffe. That project led to strong opposition from neighbourhood residents and eventually a zoning bylaw for the area.
The new zoning permits one community care facility with up to 30 units and two residential dwellings on the property.
The regional district will hold a public hearing about the bylaw amendments sometime in the near future.
