While the coastal fire centre has lifted its campfire ban for the northern regions of its jurisdictional area, fire bans will continue in the Gillies Bay fire district and on Lasqueti Island, which is also in the qathet region.
Gillies Bay fire chief Rob McWilliam said conditions in the Gillies Bay region are still very dry.
“I don’t think, at this point, the Gillies Bay fire district is going to lift the campfire ban until we get some rain,” said McWilliam. He said the Gillies Bay fire district usually allows campfires until the province shuts them down because Shelter Point regional park is located in the district.
“It’s just sort of something we live with,” said McWilliam.
He said the Gillies Bay fire department is able to put the fire ban in place. He said that notices from the coastal fire centre indicate that local authorities should be checked.
“We’re not lifting our ban at this point,” said McWilliam. “It’s the area around Gillies Bay itself. The campfire ban is still in place at Shelter Point and the caretakers are aware of that.”
