Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for sḵelhp (Saltery Bay) to Powell River, BC, on Wednesday, August 6:
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Driving conditions may be difficult. Local utility outages are possible. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.
The Weatherhood station above the Peak office on Marine Avenue is indicating more than a 60 per cent chance of showers, clouds and lightning later this afternoon in the qathet region.
The temperature will hit 20 degrees by 3 pm and drop to 14 degrees overnight. Thursday, August 7,there will be a mix of sun and cloud and a high temperature of 21 degrees in the later afternoon. The sun will return on Friday, August 8, and temperatures will be around 20 degrees.
Saturday, August 9, the daytime temperature will hit 24 degrees and Sunday, August 10, it is forecast to hit 28 degrees in the afternoon.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Canada remains at the highest level of fire preparedness, with resources deployed across the country to fight wildfires. Weather continues to play a key role in driving both fire activity and smoke movement.
"Hot and dry weather is keeping fire danger high to extreme in many areas of BC," stated a warning from ECCC. "Periods of gusty winds are contributing to challenging fire behaviour. Protect yourself from wildfire smoke."
