City awards skills park contract

Completion of the facility expected in the fall

Construction of the bike skills and skate park facility at Powell River Recreation Complex is expected to be complete by October.

At a special City of Powell River council meeting on Wednesday, July 23, councillors approved the $520,000 expenditure for the facility. Tor Birtig, director of infrastructure services, presented the report on the project on behalf of Frank D’Angio, manager of engineering services

Birtig said the engineering department and the parks, recreation and culture department had reviewed proposals from three bidders and recommended Spectrum Skate Parks Inc. It is the most suitable proponent to complete the design and construction of the bike skills and skate park, according to Birtig.

“Although they are not the lowest bid, they had the superior proposal,” Birtig said. “They scored more than 90 points, in comparison with the other two, that scored 80 and 81. They addressed both the bike skills park and the skate park very well. They plan on looking at modification so that they can utilize the existing structure that’s onsite. They don’t have to get rid of that.

“They are very cognizant of the budget requirements. As well, they are well aware of keeping maintenance to a minimum on this project so that future maintenance is not a big burden.”

The Powell River Community Forest allocated up to $550,000 to be spent on the park.
