City of Powell River announces changes to garbage pickup

Adjustments account for new development activity in the city

Important changes to area boundaries, routes and schedules for garbage pickup and recycling for 2020 have been made by the City of Powell River.

The new area maps and route schedules were included in the Waste Wise Guide mailed to every household in Powell River. The guides are also available at city hall, Powell River Recreation Complex, Powell River Public Library, and at online at powellriver.ca.

Changes affect all areas: A, B, C, D and E.

“The changes were made, primarily, to balance the collection days to account for new development activity in the city,” stated public works superintendent Murray Steer in a media release on Tuesday, January 7. “As the city grows, some areas were getting too large and the pickup days were becoming unbalanced.”

The changes were also implemented to plan for solid waste automated pickup in the future.

For households not aware of the changes, the city’s public works department has a dedicated truck on the road from Tuesday, January 7, to Friday, January 10, that will drive through the areas of change and pick up garbage left out on the wrong day. The driver will also be delivering a letter reinforcing the changes to those households.

Service alerts will be sent to all households that have subscribed to the city’s curbside (ReCollect) reminder service. Updates are being made to the system and are expected to be completed by the end of January 2020.

The new collection map and schedule at-a-glance are available at powellriver.ca. Residents requiring more information can contact public works at 604.485.8657.
