Due to a change to the provincial health officer’s order that now requires all spectators in the aquatic centre at Powell River Recreation Complex to show proof of vaccination, City of Powell River is taking additional measures to enhance those protocols moving forward.

As of Monday, November 29, all participants in aquatic centre activities ages 12 and over will be required to show proof of vaccination, according to a city media release. Participants in youth sport or child/youth programs are exempt.

The enhanced protocols for the aquatic centre stem from the design of the facility, according to city director of parks, recreation and culture Tara O’Donnell.

“Due to the operational nature and layout of the recreation complex, we cannot control facility access for guests who move beyond the front desk to participate in either the aquatic centre or the weight room,” stated O’Donnell. “In the interest of public safety, we have decided to check for both facilities going forward."

As per the recent change in the provincial health officer’s order, the requirement for proof of vaccination for aquatic centre spectators will be implemented immediately.
