Solid waste

City of Powell River council has approved its municipal solid waste collection bylaw, which will feature the city going to automated garbage collection using carts and doing away with garbage tags.

At the May 20 council meeting, council unanimously adopted the bylaw to provide for collection, transfer, disposal and recycling of solid waste.

According to the bylaw, each single-family dwelling, secondary suite and each unit in a duplex in the city being used as a single-family residence shall be provided basic service for its residential garbage. Those receiving basic service shall use a city-issued 120-litre cart for automated garbage collection. There will also be larger carts specified for multifamily residences such as apartments. The automated services will use the city’s two garbage trucks that come equipped with automated arms to pick up the carts, rather than garbage being handled by city staff.

Because the city will be losing revenue by getting rid of garbage tags, solid waste collection service fees will be raised in 2022 to an annual charge of $120, up from the current $79.

Approves bylaw

Council approved a zoning bylaw amendment for a lot at 4545 Manson Avenue, across from Powell River Academy of Music, to rezone the R2 property into four residential small lots, designated CD4.

Changes zoning

City councillors approved a zoning bylaw amendment for the property at 7042 Cranberry Street to change the designation from NT (institutions) to R2 (single and two-family residential).
