City of Powell River Council briefs

Supports qathet regional FireSmart program; Appoints interim chief administrative officer; Directs staff to prepare draft strategic plan

Endorses application
City of Powell River Council has endorsed an application to Union of British Columbia Municipalities to support the qathet regional FireSmart program.

At the December 1 city council meeting, councillors voted to support the program and to fund a regional community wildfire resiliency plan for the qathet region. Council also voted to endorse carrying out the 2023 regional FireSmart program and community wildfire resiliency plan collaboratively with Tla’amin Nation and qathet Regional District.

It also endorsed the regional district to receive and manage the grant funding.

Appointment announced
Mayor Ron Woznow outlined in a rise and report that at the November 17 closed council meeting, council appointed Chris Jackson as the interim chief administrative officer for a period of up to four months, or until the new chief administrative office is appointed.

Strategic planning
Council carried a motion that staff be directed to prepare a draft strategic plan, facilitate workshops and conduct information-gathering interviews with mayor, council and senior staff. Staff is also directed to make arrangements for a committee of the whole strategic planning workshop with senior staff in attendance.
