City of Powell River has flown its flags at half-mast in recognition of the shootings in Nova Scotia.
At the April 23 city council meeting, Mayor Dave Formosa said this was in response to the murders of 22 people, one of which was a female RCMP officer killed in the line of duty.
“She was a mother, a daughter, and a wife, and 21 other souls also died; it was a tragedy,” said Formosa. “We’re flying the Nova Scotia flag, and it’s being joined with the Canadian flag and the Earth Month flag. I just wanted to mention, if folks are wondering when we are flying flags at half-mast, it’s in honour of the folks that were killed. That was the largest killing in Canadian history, I understand.”
With regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, Formosa said in his weekly update that he wanted to remind people to be kind to one another and to be patient.
“We’re doing well,” said Formosa. “[Provincial health officer] Dr. Bonnie Henry is speaking about soon, we’ll slowly start to see a few things coming back. We’ll never see, for a little while, until there is a vaccine, a full rebound. It will be a new normal.
“Until we have a vaccine, we’ll slowly step into things and open up stuff somewhat, but only when it is announced. We have to stay the course.”
