City of Powell River grants tax exemptions

Council approves properties that will only pay three per cent of taxes in 2024

RECEIVING RELIEF: City of Powell River councillors unanimously supported granting 97 per cent tax exemptions to 51 properties for 2024 property taxes.

A total of 51 properties representing nearly $400,000 in city taxation were given permissive tax exemptions by City of Powell River councillors.

At a special city council meeting on October 30, councillors passed four bylaws for permissive tax exemptions, one day prior to the October 31 deadline.

There was no discussion from councillors during the bylaw adoption process. Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the four bylaws.

Properties that have been provided permissive tax will have 97 per cent of their city property taxes forgiven. This means the organizations will have to pay three per cent of the city taxes levied in 2024.

The first bylaw, 2729, had 11 properties mentioned. This included parcels of land owned by the Salvation Army, Powell Lake Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Westview Baptist Church, Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, Westview United Church, Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese, Guru Arjan Dev Sikh Society of Powell River, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Canada and the Synod of the Diocese of New Westminster.

Bylaw 2730, the largest, had 38 properties mentioned. These include Alano Club of Powell River’s facility, Carlson Community Club, Cranberry Community Hall Association, Life Cycle Housing Society, Nature Trust of British Columbia, Powell River Academy of Music, Powell River Bon Accueil Society, property leased by Powell River Brain Injury Society, property leased by qathet Art Council, property leased by Timberlane Fine Arts Society, property leased by Timberlane Barracks Sponsor Committee, property used by qathet Film Society, property leased by Far Off Broadway Theatre Company Society, property leased by Powell River Villa Soccer Club, property leased by qathet Museum and Archives Society, Powell River Italian Community Club, property leased by Powell River Lawn Bowling Club, property leased by Powell River Miklat Recovery House Society, Powell River Otago Rugby Football Club, Powell River Search and Rescue Society, Powell River Sunset Homes Society, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164, Senior Citizens Association of Powell River Branch 49, Powell River BC Inc., British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption Archdiocese of Vancouver, Source Club Society, property leased to Tourism Powell River, Townsite Heritage Society of Powell River, property leased by Westview Flying Club, property leased by Powell River Sport and Fitness Society.

Applications for 2024 permissive tax exemptions for 2024 totalled $560,118. There were five organizations that applied for permissive tax exemptions that were not granted the exemptions. These included: inclusion Powell River, Lift Community Services of qathet Society, Powell River Kiwanis Housing Society, Powell River Kiwanis Village Society and Strive Living Society.
