City of Powell River staff have been directed to report on strategies for building an emergency services facility capital reserve fund with the goal to build a facility within two years.

At the December 3 city council meeting, councillors approved a motion to research establishing the fund.

Councillor George Doubt said the goal is to get a report from staff about how an emergency services facility capital reserve fund can be built, where the money can come from, how much the city will need, how long it will take to build up the reserve, and other details. The actual action of forming the reserve will come later after council receives the report and discusses it, he said.

“I’m in favour of doing it,” said Doubt. “We should look ahead and see if we can save for the future.”

Mayor Dave Formosa said the city was remiss and should have started a reserve for this project a number of years ago.

Council unanimously endorsed the recommendation.
