City of Powell River officials are hoping the province will grant a longer licence of occupation for Crown land adjacent to the south boat harbour.
Shehzad Somji, the city’s chief financial officer, told city council at its Thursday, May 21 meeting, the city has a five-year lease on the property coming due at the end of the year. The city is asking for a longer term of 30 years on the property.
There is a $250-application fee and annual fees on the property amounting to about $1,100 paid to the province. An endorsement from council is required to seek the longer lease term.
Mayor Dave Formosa said given the fact that the city has spent about $3 million on the south boat harbour, he is hoping the harbour revitalization will help secure a longer lease from the province.
The recommendation before council was that the application for a replacement tenure of License No. 241578 over District Lot 6061 and that part of District Lot 5988, Group 1, New Westminster District, containing 0.711 hectares more or less for marina purposes, with the Province of British Columbia, be endorsed.
The motion was carried unanimously.
Somji said the leased land in question is for the water area starting at Fairmont Street and running south the length of three properties along Marine Avenue and out to the breakwater. Somji said the leased area is in front of the white building on the waterside of Marine Avenue.
