At a qathet Regional District (qRD) meeting on March 22, the board decided to direct staff to engage with Diabetes Canada to reestablish clothing donation bins at the four mainland recycling depots, located at or near Black Point, Town Centre Mall, Tla’amin Nation and Lund.
According to a staff report, this is a reinstatement of the clothing collection program previously run at four of the depots between 2015 and 2019.
Diabetes Canada takes on the full cost for the clothing collection bins, pickup and transportation for redistribution or recycling. The bins that will be installed have been redesigned to prevent the possibility of people getting stuck while trying to enter the bins.
At the March 1 qRD committee of the whole meeting, City of Powell River director Cindy Elliott said it’s “super important” that a way is found to recycle textiles. The committee voted unanimously to recommend to the board that it direct staff to engage with Diabetes Canada to reestablish the donation bins.
