UPDATED   An early morning car accident knocked out power for Powell River residents south of town and closed Highway 101 for a number of hours Friday, October 26.

Police were called to the single-car collision at 2:30 am after a car veered off the road and struck a hydro pole near Bradford Road.

“The female driver was trapped in the vehicle and we had to wait for the cable to be cut before the woman could be extricated,” said RCMP Sergeant Rod Wiebe.

According to BC Hydro, 1,763 homes were affected by the power outage. At 11.41 am power was restored to all residents.

The highway was closed to traffic, but a detour was set up through Paradise Valley until it opened to single-lane traffic at 9 am. Both lanes were opened just after 10 am.

The driver was taken to Powell River General Hospital for assessment, however police report the 42-year-old did not appear to be suffering from any serious injuries. The cause of the collision is still under investigation by the RCMP.
