Pool treatment system receives funds

City of Powell River council approved a recommendation from Powell River Community Forest Limited to provide $34,000 in additional funding to complete the installation of an ultraviolet treatment system for the Powell River Recreation Complex swimming pools. This money is in addition to the original grant of $86,000 from community forest to retrofit the pool with the new system.

Asset management plans delivery

City of Powell River has developed its asset management strategy in order to assist growth, improvement and service delivery of its infrastructure services.

The plan was presented to council at its meeting April 3 and presents a thorough review on the way the city delivers infrastructure services including water supply, wastewater, storm water, marine, buildings, roads, airports, park and site improvements and equipment. The report states that all of the city’s assets have a current replacement value of $424,598,942.

The life cycle budget, part of the asset management plan, is used to replace assets as their useful lives expire. A detailed report from city staff pointed out that “Adopting an asset management strategy will enable the city to meet the requirements of their corporate plan, and to provide services needed by the community in a financially sustainable manner.”

Council recognized that it is essential to balance the community’s expectations for services with its ability to pay for the infrastructure assets used to provide the services. The over-arching goal of the management plan is to enable the city to make sound technical, social and economic decisions on the management of its asset infrastructure.

People wishing for more information about the asset management strategy can attend an open house at city hall prior to the council meeting, from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, April 17.

Helmet safety testing

Councillor Debbie Dee requested council’s support in advocating for safety testing and standards for sport helmets with a view to submitting a resolution to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Council agreed to support the motion that the recommendation be distributed.
