City of Powell River council approved issuing a development permit that allows Tim Hortons to install a double lane order station. The permit is subject to a number of conditions, including installing a bike rack that can accommodate three bicycles.

Wildfire protection

Council voted to support a regional community wildfire protection plan for the wildland urban interface areas roughly from Saltery Bay to Lund, coordinated by Powell River Regional District. A plan would study interface fire hazards and response issues throughout the region and offer recommendations to address areas of concern.

Respectful workplace

Council adopted a respectful workplace and prevention of harassment, bullying and discrimination policy. The policy meets requirements of the new occupational health and safety legislation that became effective November 1.

Future of postal services

Council voted to send a letter to the minister responsible for Canada Post requesting that the federal government consider innovative ways, such as providing financial services, to generate postal revenue, during the review of the Canadian Postal Service Charter in 2014.

Call answer levy

Council passed a motion to send a letter to UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) in support of a uniform province-wide call answer levy on wireless services to support and improve 911 services in BC.

Creative city

Council voted to submit a presentation proposal for the 2014 Creative City Summit being held June 11 to 13 in Hamilton, Ontario. The presentation would focus on phase two of the arts, culture and creative sector strategy recently presented to council.

Tennis courts

Council passed a motion to award a contract for the resurfacing of the tennis court and installation of a pickleball court in Townsite to Flex Court Canada, Inc. for $156,474.

Council broadcasts

Council directed staff to include $32,000 in the 2014 capital budget request and $15,000 in the operations budget for monthly service provision for council and committee-of-the-whole meetings live stream and broadcast. If the funding is approved in the 2014 budget, staff will issue a request for proposals for the service.

Bylaws

Council adopted the municipal ticket information utilization bylaw and four tax exemption bylaws that put in place permissive tax exemptions for 2014.
