Joins recycling program
City of Powell River will be joining a provincial residential paper and product-packaging recycling program. Council approved a committee of the whole recommendation at its October 19 meeting to join Recycle BC, formerly known as Multi-Material BC. The agreement is expected to bring in close to $160,000 in new revenue for the city.

Approves non-profit tax exemptions
Council approved six permissive tax exemption bylaws providing $253,000 of relief for 48 properties owned by non-profit organizations in the city. Councillor Russell Brewer, chair of the city’s finance committee, told council that the majority of non-profits receiving the tax break provide important services for the region and would likely fold if required to pay city taxes.

Advocates for wildfire mitigation support
Council will be applying for Union of BC Municipalities funding to assist in continuing work in the Penticton Trails area to thin the forest and clear up potential fuels that could add to a potential wildfire. Council received a plan for managing the close to 90 acres of city forested land from the regional emergency management program and will continue to address recommendations in the regional community wildfire protection plan.
