Council approves summer schedule

City of Powell River council has approved a summer schedule. The council and committee-of-the-whole meetings scheduled for July 7, August 4 and September 1 have been cancelled.

Regional parks

Council granted consent to the Powell River Regional District board to adopt the regional park and service establishment bylaw, which broadens the types of lands and recreational uses that could fall under the regional parks service.

Caretaker agreement

Council voted to renew the caretaker’s agreement for the Cranberry Lake bird sanctuary with the current caretaker for a three-year period.

Sea plane base

Council voted to accept the tenure offer from the province for a 30-year lease on .21 hectares on Powell Lake for a public dock and seaplane base for $1.

Forum

Council voted to participate in a community-to-community forum in January 2012 to discuss potential avenues for regional collaboration and planning with elected officials from Tla’Amin (Sliammon) First Nation and Powell River Regional District. The Regional District has submitted a grant application to UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) for funding for the one-day event.

Bylaws

Council adopted the north harbour and south harbour rates and regulations bylaws and an amendment to the city’s building bylaw. The major changes include drainage provisions to better address issues relating to Powell River’s climate and to increase the penalty for beginning work with no permit or when a stop work notice has been issued to double the permit fee.
