Council okays terminal upgrades

City of Powell River council gave permission to BC Ferries to use the city’s foreshore lease area for terminal upgrades from June 2013 to March 2014. The motion also stated that ship replacement, service levels, home porting and a second berth are considered council advocacy issues.

Riding boundaries

Council voted to send a letter to MP John Weston, West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, to advise that the city objects to the change in the federal electoral boundary that separates Powell River from the lower Sunshine Coast.

Cranberry fire hall

Council passed a motion to request BC’s government amend the Crown grant issued on property currently occupied by the Cranberry fire hall by adding education purposes as a permitted use. The grant currently prescribes fire hall purposes as a permitted use on the property.

Library appointment

Council appointed Linda Rosen to the Powell River Public Library board of directors. Her term will end on December 31, 2014.

Latecomer charges

Council passed a motion to impose latecomer charges on land located on Bowness Avenue and Collingwood Place that will benefit from an extended road and water, sanitary and storm mains that are part of a proposed subdivision along Bowness.

Willingdon building

Council approved, in principle, a development permit for building façade upgrades and an addition to the second storey of a commercial boat sales and service building located at 4462 Willingdon Avenue. The proponents must submit a complete set of drawings, include sufficient parking and amalgamate three lots before the development permit is presented to council for final approval.

Veterinary clinic

Council approved a development permit for 4830 Joyce Avenue to permit an addition to an existing veterinary clinic.

City petitions province

City of Powell River council passed a motion to join the City of Fort St. John, the City of Port Alberni and the District of Elkford in requesting the provincial government increase the persons with disabilities benefit from $900 to $1,200 a month and that the rate be indexed to match cost of living increases.

Seawalk cleanup

Council voted to authorize staff to issue a request for quote for the removal of vegetation between Marine Avenue and the seawalk for an amount not to exceed $30,000. The province is contributing $25,000 to the project and the city’s contribution of $5,000 is funded from the gravel, roads and vegetation account.

Harbour beacons

Council passed a motion to enter into an agreement with the Canadian Coast Guard that would see the city own and maintain two marine aids at the north and south harbours. The cost for the transfer of the equipment is funded from the north and south harbour operations and maintenance accounts.

Regional district office

Council adopted official community plan and zoning bylaw amendments that changes the designation of the previous Powell River Regional District office in Townsite from Institutional to Townsite Residential and rezones the property from NT, Institution, to R3, Townsite Residential.
