Recommends camera-surveillance policy

Responding to a letter and petition from Powell River North Harbour moorage holders regarding the replacement a malfunctioning surveillance camera, City of Powell River committee of the whole directed staff to draft a video-surveillance policy at its January 30 meeting.

The correspondence expresses concerns that access to the camera via internet will not be made available to moorage holders. It was recommended by staff that further consideration be taken with respect to privacy of information.

The policy would be intended to meet rigorous requirements from Office of the Information Privacy Commissioner for BC, including the reason for camera surveillance, location, access, life cycle of the video record and public awareness.

Recommends sports hall of fame approval

A recommendation made to committee of the whole at its January 30 meeting to approve a sports hall of fame selection committee was moved forward for council’s approval.

The purpose of the committee is to develop all procedures for nomination and induction of members into a sports hall of fame, which is to be located in Powell River Recreation Complex.

The committee will be comprised of 11 members, including the councillor holding the portfolio for parks and recreation and one representative from hockey, soccer, track, football and rugby, skating, curling, softball and baseball, swimming and two members at large.

Announces new financial officer

At a January 25 City of Powell River finance committee meeting, Debra Oakman was introduced as the city’s new interim chief financial officer (CFO), replacing Kathleen Day. Oakman takes over the position in the midst of the city’s 2018 budget process and five-year financial plan. She was formerly with Comox Valley Regional District, where she served in various roles. Before retirement, Day had served as the city’s CFO since July 2016.
