Council endorses liquor licence

City of Powell River councillors passed a motion recommending the province issue a liquor licence for a proposed new bistro at 6275 Marine Avenue in Townsite. The city received no public opposition to the application to allow extended hours for liquor service.

Executive committee

Councillors endorsed the creation of a Regional Emergency Executive Committee and appointed the director of fire and emergency services to the committee, as well as Mayor Dave Formosa and Councillor Maggie Hathaway as the voting city elected officials on the committee.

Station closures

Councillors voted to send a letter to Fisheries and Oceans Canada expressing concern about the safety of west coast marine traffic and coastal residents if Marine Communications and Traffic Services centres are consolidated. The letter will request reconsideration of the closure of the centres at Comox, Ucluelet and Vancouver.

OCP proposals

Councillors approved the request for proposals for a major update of the official community plan and for a local action plan for greenhouse gas reduction. Councillors also approved the city applying for a $25,000 grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ green municipal fund for the greenhouse gas reduction plan. If the application is successful, the city’s $25,000 in matching funds would come from the community works funds reserve.

Search and rescue equipment

Councillors passed a motion to sell city equipment used for search and rescue operations to the Powell River Search and Rescue Society for $1, with the condition the equipment shall be returned to the city if the society disbands.

Meeting schedule

A majority of councillors voted in opposition to a motion to hold council meetings at 7 pm on the first and third Thursday of each month and committee-of-the-whole meetings at 9 am on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.
