City of Powell River voters will decide on whether to authorize a loan for a proposed new fire hall at Duncan Street and Ontario Avenue.

At a meeting on September 1, City of Powell River Council revised the assent voting, or referendum question regarding a new fire hall, to appear on the October 15 municipal election ballot.

The question will read: Are you in favour of the City of Powell River adopting fire hall/emergency services facility loan authorization bylaw 2695, 2022, to authorize borrowing of a sum not to exceed $7.5 million, over a maximum of 20 years, in order to finance the construction of a new fire hall/emergency services facility at the city’s public works yard, located at 7160 Duncan Street?

The revision removes the words “with interest” after the $7.5 million figure.

A staff report indicated that recent public notice of the question resulted in enquiries regarding whether the loan’s interest amount is included in the overall amount borrowed. The staff report indicated the cost to borrow is additional.

At the June 2 city council meeting, council voted unanimously to endorse the referendum question for the municipal election in October.
