Council revises procedures bylaw

Updates and revisions made to guide

Powell River residents will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the way City of Powell River Council proposes to conduct its business.

At its Thursday, June 18, meeting, council unanimously supported the first three readings of Council Procedure Bylaw 2415, 2015.

In introducing the bylaw, Councillor CaroleAnn Leishman said Marie Claxton, city clerk, had provided council with a report outlining how some items were being removed, some references were being updated, and council’s schedule was being revised to reposition its committee of the whole meeting.

“It’s pretty straightforward in terms of the changes,” Leishman said.

Acting Clerk Patricia Wilkinson said notice will be given for public comment and input for a two-week period and then the bylaw will come back to council for final approval in July.

In her report to council, Claxton said the current council procedure bylaw was adopted in 2006 and has been amended a number of times. Most amendments are regarding changes to council or committee of the whole meeting times.

The main reason for revising the procedure bylaw is to include the new committee of the whole meeting schedule, which were on the Thursdays that council met. The new bylaw entrenches the change of committee of the whole meetings to Tuesdays at 3:30 pm on the same week as council meets. In reviewing the bylaw, other changes were recommended.
