Repairs to shore up parts of the bank along the Marine Avenue sea walk are planned after several water main breaks in the past weeks have increased erosion.
Mark Murray, who has a residence on Marine, brought his concerns to city councillors Thursday, September 17.
He told council he is worried about the number of recent main breaks and his yard and potentially his home could flood if measures were not undertaken to solve the problem.
City of Powell River chief administrative officer Mac Fraser told Murray that he and his staff were aware of the issues and were working to resolve them.
“We did have several water main breaks,” said Tor Birtig, director of infrastructure. The breaks were the combined result of older pipe that had lost some of its strength and a valve that had been left open and should have been closed.
“That created some higher pressures than what we expected,” said Birtig.
With several breaks in the past few weeks came a high flow of water. The storm system was inundated and water flowed across Marine Avenue and down the bank.
Birtig said that city and highways workers met on Thursday, September 24 to draw together plans on how to make repairs and stabilize the bank. Those repairs will be completed in the next couple of weeks, he said.
Birtig added BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure had been out to inspect the stability of Marine Avenue after the erosion.
“If there was further erosion, that could be an issue,” said Birtig, “but at this time they are not concerned.”
