Drivers receive an electric charge

Fuelling station provides cleaner alternative

There is new energy in Powell River automotive circles. Electric vehicles now have a public charging station.

At the Thursday, August 20, City of Powell River Council meeting, Tod English, who was making a presentation to council about the new Pacific Point Market, said Powell River’s first electric charging station for vehicles is now up and running at the market. He said his staff worked closely with city staff through the process of setting up the station.

English said he was recently working on an ATM machine in the store and a customer asked about the odd-looking installation outside the store. English told the customer that it was a fuelling station. The customer asked what kind of fuel it was dispensing and English responded that it was electric fuel. The customer said nobody was going to use it.

Within an hour, a driver pulled up with a Tesla electric car and hooked his vehicle up.

“Since then it has been used every day,” English said. “Often, both ports are being used. Every time someone is out there I ask where they are from and there was a couple from Lions Bay with a Tesla yesterday. They were charging up to get on the last boat. They had been on Savary Island for a couple of weeks.

“It just goes to show you how much we needed it,” said English. “It’s used a lot.”
