FATAL CRASH: Traffic was tied up on Highway 101 south of Powell River as a result of a two-vehicle fatal motor vehicle collision on May 17.

Powell River RCMP have confirmed there was a two-vehicle fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 101 south of Powell River.

According to a media release, on May 17, at 9:04 am, Powell River RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle collision in the 11000 block of Highway 101.

“Police arrived on scene and determined that a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu was northbound on Highway 101 when it crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a southbound 2021 Isuzu cube van,” stated sergeant Sandi Swanson, in an update on May 18. “The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu, a 25-year-old resident of Powell River, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the cube van was shaken up but not injured.

“The BC coroners office and a traffic analyst with Vancouver Island district RCMP traffic services attended the scene and are conducting an investigation. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol to be a contributing factor in the collision. The police investigation is ongoing at this time.”
