In accordance with qathet Regional District (qRD)’s Savary Island Outdoor Fire Control Bylaw No. 549, the lighting of burn piles, including backyard burning and burn barrels is prohibited across all areas of Savary Island, as of noon on Thursday, May 18, according to a qRD media release.

The public is reminded that there is a maximum penalty of $2,000 for contraventions of the fire ban. Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department (SIVFD) is authorized to enforce the bylaw and receives regular support from visiting RCMP officers, the release stated.

“Fire bans are put in place to protect our community from preventable loss resulting from a fire,” stated SIVFD fire chief Chris Philpott. “Due to the unexpected hot weather and wildfires throughout the province, we are taking a proactive approach and placing a ban on burn piles, backyard burning and burn barrels. We greatly appreciate everyone’s compliance.”

For the time being, campfires are still allowed but residents and visitors are reminded that anyone having a campfire must adhere to all requirements per Bylaw 549.
