Firefighters will be holding out their boots this weekend in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Powell River firefighters are organizing a community boot drive to raise awareness and funds to show their support for people with neuromuscular disorders.

They will have their boots out from 10 am to 8 pm on Friday, September 21 at Town Centre Mall, Safeway, Save-On-Foods and Walmart. From 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, September 22, firefighters will be at the mall and Safeway.

Also on Saturday, members of Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department will be at Powell River Fall Fair and Black Point Store.

Powell River firefighter Bill Grantham, president of Local 1298 of the International Association of Fire Fighters and Muscular Dystrophy chair, said members have been donating time since 1960 to provide ongoing support and resources to continue the search for a cure for citizens with neuromuscular disorders. “Help firefighters fill the boot,” he said. “Let’s make muscles move.”

Muscular dystrophy is a group of over 100 types of neuromuscular disorders characterized by the wasting and progressive weakness of muscles. Over time, many people with neuromuscular disorders are unable to walk, speak or ultimately breathe. Some diseases are life-threatening and currently there is no cure.

The money raised by firefighters will be donated to improve the quality of life for people living with neuromuscular disorders by purchasing mobility equipment, providing support services and funding research, which will one day lead to a cure.
