For the first time in 10 years, Powell River will have a fireworks finale for Canada Day celebrations on Monday, July 1, at Willingdon Beach.
The Canada Day birthday bash is hosted by the City of Powell River parks, recreation and culture department. The fireworks show is sanctioned but any backyard fireworks or fireworks set off in city parks is banned.
“Certainly, we want everyone to enjoy the fireworks that are being done down at the beach,” said city fire rescue chief Terry Peters. “Insurance is in place and safety measures are in place. We think it's going to be a great event but enjoy the fireworks there only.”
Peters said if people purchase fireworks and set them off, there are fines attached of up to $300.
“However, if we show up because of this, I have the authority to charge you for our time, based on the cost of our staff, vehicles and replacement costs,” said Peters.
Peters emphasized the risk and danger fireworks are to people, property, and that they can cause fires.
“Sky lanterns are a whole new ballgame,” said Peters. “Just think about it. We're setting something on fire and setting it free.”
The Canada Day fireworks finale will start at 10:15 pm on Monday, July 1.
