First Nation agreements will be online

Documents an excellent example of cooperation

City of Powell River Council has agreed to allow the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to post agreements with the Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation.

At the Thursday, June 18, council meeting, Councillor Rob Southcott said the city is not the only organization that appreciates the facility and effectiveness of its relationship with Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation.

Southcott said the relationship has grown over the years through the efforts of many people but he honours the efforts of Mayor Dave Formosa, and of former Mayor Stewart Alsgard.

“We are not in a large group where there are really functional agreements,” Southcott said. “Just on a personal note, I’ve been in correspondence with the director of the Simon Fraser University community economic development program and she also wants access to these documents for use in that program.”

Southcott said having the FCM post the agreements is for the purpose of inspiring other communities. He said it is reason to be proud and grateful.

Southcott read a recommendation that permission for the FCM to post agreements between the city and Tla’amin be granted. Council carried the recommendation unanimously.

In a letter to the city, first considered at the committee of the whole, Peigi Wilson, program manager from the First Nations - Municipal Community Infrastructure Partnership Program, from the FCM, stated: “Your agreements provide excellent examples for other first nations and municipalities that are working to develop their own joint service agreements. We would be delighted if we could post the agreements to our website.”
