On this day:
In 1918, the first cases of the Spanish flu were documented, later referred to as the Great Influenza Epidemic when the first case was determined to have been in the United States. The disease caused more than 25 million deaths around the world.

In 1927, George Herman “Babe” Ruth became the highest-paid player in baseball history when he signed a contract with New York Yankees worth $70,000 per season.

In 2005, businesswoman and television personality Martha Stewart left a federal prison after serving five months for her role in a stock scandal and faced another five months of home confinement.
