Green Party of Canada announced its candidate for the riding of North Island-Powell River on Sunday, May 24.

Brenda Sayers is from the Hupacasath First Nation in the Alberni Valley on Vancouver Island where she serves as a councillor. Over the last two years Sayers has worked to fight the ratification of the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA).

Green Party of BC interim leader Adam Olsen announced Sayers’ candidacy during a Vancouver Island Green Party rally.

The North Island-Powell River riding association for the Green Party posted Sayers’ introduction to its website.

“We need to see a change in Ottawa; a change that is people-driven,” Sayers said in her letter. “People of this country need to participate in the shaping of our country and drive public policy. This is a critical juncture in Canada’s history. When we stand together, anything is possible.”

Voters will go to the polls this fall to elect members of parliament on October 19, 2015 in Canada’s 42nd general election.
