EARLY HEAT WARNING: Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an early season heat event for the qathet region. The photo above was taken of the bee garden at the Westview sea walk.

The UV index today in the qathet region was unusually high, indicating a concerning level of exposure. The Weatherhood app has forecast a high temperature of 19 degrees for this afternoon and into the evening.

Friday, June 6, the temperature will rise to 21 degrees; Saturday, June 7, is forecast to be 24 degrees; Sunday, June 8, will be a sizzling 27 degrees, with full sun.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an early season heat event for this Saturday and into early next week.

A period of elevated temperatures is expected in the qathet region and Vancouver Island, stated the ECCC warning.

"A ridge of high pressure is bringing high temperatures to the region. Daytime highs are expected to be in the high 20s to low 30s with overnight lows in the low to mid teens," warned the ECCC. "High temperatures will persist into early next week."

How to keep a living space cool: Block the sun by closing curtains or blinds; watch for the effects of heat illness: heavy sweating, rash, cramps, fainting, high body temperature and the worsening of some health conditions; use fans to pull in cooler air from outdoors, but if you or someone you care for is experiencing symptoms of heat illness, find a cooler space.
