As of July 8, both drivers involved in a July 3 two vehicle collision on Highway 101 at Mercer Road remained in hospital in critical condition, according to an email statement to Coast Reporter from Sunshine Coast RCMP community engagement officer, Constable Karen Whitby,

The two individuals were both lone occupants of their vehicles when involved in the crash which closed Highway 101 for several hours. Both were transported to by air to Vancouver for medical treatment, according to an email from Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department chief Ryan Daley.

“The Halfmoon Bay Fire Department was paged out at 3:32 p.m. to a head on collision at Mercer Rd. and Highway 101," Daley wrote.

"Both drivers sustained serious injuries and required removal using the Jaws of Life".

Heather Amos, manager of communications and engagement with the Provincial Health Services Authority advised Coast Reporter that five ambulances were dispatched, and paramedics provided emergency medical care on scene. A third individual, a member of the fire department injured was at the scene and transported by ground ambulance to Sechelt hospital and then released, according to a spokesperson for Sunshine Coast Regional District emergency services.
