Cancelled ferries, a detour through Tsawwassen and a late start in Powell River Kings’ final game against Victoria Grizzlies ended 3-2 on a goal by Zach Urban at 13:52 of the first overtime period.
After a late start due to the altered route, game five followed the pattern of a tight, scoreless first period.
Grizzlies got on the board at 2:41 of the second period with a powerplay goal but Kings’ captain Teagan Waugh tied it 1-1 at 12:15.
Grizzlies regained the lead 2-1 at 18:30 but early in the final period JP Villeneuve converted a nice feed from Matt Dupont at 4:19 to send the 2-2 game into overtime.
Kings had a couple of great chances to win the game but Jarryd Leung was stopped by the Grizzlies’ netminder and Luke Nogard narrowly missed with a shot just over the crossbar.
The winning goal was a beauty by Urban, who held the puck in at the Kings’ blue line, toe-dragged by Luke Ripley and with his long reach beat Jonah Imoo with a great move.
Kings gave the Grizzlies everything they had in this series but came up just short in their bid to move on to play Alberni Valley Bulldogs, who eliminated Nanaimo Clippers three games to two.
Kings' banquet will be held Wednesday evening, March 27.
