An incident at Westview Elementary School [above, lower left] in Powell River on May 15 was addressed by its principal in an email to parents.

Parents of qathet School District students who attend Westview Elementary School received a message from its principal, Jennifer Kennedy, in the afternoon on May 15, addressing an incident that took place near the school in the morning.

Before classes began, an adult male was seen behaving inappropriately outside school grounds near the hockey court, according to Kennedy.

“Staff responded right away and the RCMP were notified; the individual left the area, and the matter is now being handled by police” stated Kennedy, in an email. “All students are safe. Their safety and well-being are our highest priority.

“In an abundance of caution, the hockey court and field will be off-limits to students in the morning before school as we review our supervision protocols and processes. We’re also proud of the students who reported the concern—they did exactly the right thing.

“I have spoken with the Grade 6/7 classes and students who came forward to acknowledge what happened, reassured them that trusted adults are handling it, and encouraged them to keep asking questions or sharing concerns if they need to.

“Your child may mention the incident at home. If they do, please listen calmly and reassure them they are safe and that adults are taking care of the situation. Thank you for your continued trust as we work together to keep our school safe and supportive for everyone.”
