Missing man returns home

Searchers stand down

A search for a missing man in Powell River’s backcountry has been called off.  Powell River Search and Rescue (PRSAR) were informed at just after 9 am by the RCMP that the 61-year-man had been located after he returned home.

Searchers scoured the main road and side roads in the Lois Lake area after being brought in by police on Wednesday evening. The man had been reported missing to the RCMP on Tuesday, October 22. PRSAR was brought in at 8 pm Wednesday.

Its members searched until 3 am Thursday morning and started back at daylight.

“The main thing we were trying to find was his vehicle, then we would have some idea of where he was,” said Laurence Edwards, PRSAR president. “We weren’t able to locate his vehicle so I’m not aware of exactly where he was.”

Edwards said that he is waiting for more detailed information from the RCMP about where the man went to help searchers in the future. Searches become increasingly more difficult when SAR organizers do not have detailed information about where the missing person could be, he explained.

“We didn’t actually find him, but it’s been a good result that he’s ended up back at home,” said Edwards.
