With the new year here already, I offer my best wishes to every resident of Powell River-Sunshine Coast from Anvil Island to Port Neville and all the places in between.

Wherever I go, in my former role as minister or as a private member, I come across people with ties to our beautiful coast.

Some tell me of spending summers at one of the numerous children’s camps, others of their kayak or sailing trips up one of the inlets or to Desolation Sound, and so many remember a hockey tournament in Powell River. But a universal theme from them all is that the Sunshine Coast has created good memories.

The home of the shíshálh, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, Tla’amin, Klahoose, Hamalco and the Wei Wai Kum/Kwiakah Nations since time immemorial, the natural beauty, the people and the cultures of the Sunshine Coast are unlike anywhere else.

While we face adversity in addressing some of our community’s urgent needs around homes, health care, and water in some parts of the coast, important projects are underway and others are planned with the goal of ensuring people have homes, access to health care and enough water for their homes and gardens throughout the year.

Thank you to the BC public service, which has borne a particularly heavy load during the past year: members of our health-care profession, teachers, public servants, elected officials and their teams of supporters.

It is such an honour to represent Powell River-Sunshine Coast in the BC Legislature, to reflect and promote our communities’ interests in Victoria as your member of the Legislative Assembly.

Happy holidays and happy new year to everyone.
