NEW ROLE: North Island-Powell River MP Aaron Gunn has indicated he will be advancing the interests of those in the fishing industry with his appointment to the House of Commons standing committee for fisheries and oceans.

North Island-Powell River MP Aaron Gunn has been appointed to the House of Commons standing committee for fisheries and oceans.

In a statement from Gunn, he indicated that this committee represents multiple industries within his riding and thousands of jobs, including in recreational fishing, commercial fishing and aquaculture.

“More importantly, it also represents a way of life that is central to many coastal communities and more than a dozen First Nations,” stated Gunn. “This is personal for me. For years, individuals who earn their living on the ocean have been punished by punitive legislation and arbitrary closures that jeopardize their livelihoods and ability to feed their families.”

Gunn stated that two years ago, he produced a documentary on this very subject, entitled No Fishing Allowed: The Liberal Plan to Decimate an Entire Industry, which garnered more than half a million views on YouTube and highlighted important concerns surrounding the mass maritime closures planned by the Liberal government.

“I look forward to working with Mel Arnold, Clifford Small, Chris D’Entremont and other committee members on this critical file and standing up for the hardworking fishermen of North Island-Powell River,” stated Gunn.

Gunn has also released a statement on the provincial government’s plans to have four new ferries built in a Chinese shipyard.
