WANTS INCREASE: North Island - Powell River MP Rachel Blaney has called on the government to increase the guaranteed income supplement for seniors in the coming budget.

In the House of Commons question period on February 15, North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney, the NDP seniors critic, called on the government to increase the guaranteed income supplement (GIS) for all seniors in the next federal budget.

In a media release, Blaney stated that after the Liberals created an unfair old age security (OAS) increase — that leaves out seniors aged 65 to 75 — many seniors have been left trying to keep up with rising food and housing costs.

Blaney’s question to minister of seniors Kamal Khera was as follows: "Seniors built this country and deserve dignity, but soaring food and housing costs are leaving many behind. Under this government, seniors are struggling to keep up with everyday costs. The Liberals don’t seem to agree.

"This government has failed to extend the increase of OAS to seniors under 75. So, will they raise the guaranteed income supplement in the budget to lift all seniors out of poverty?"
