Outrigger canoe paddler from qathet region wins gold in Hawaii

Competitor has successful summer on the water

Paddlers from the qathet region have had a spectacular summer, winning medals in competitions overseas, including Samoa, Thailand and Hawaii.

“Our Jim Underwood has had an amazing month, competing in Samoa with the Masters 60s men's team, and winning bronze,” said Suncoast Paddling Club president Bruce Layzell. “He then competed in Hawaii, in the 50th anniversary of the Queen Lili race. His team won gold, an amazing accomplishment.”

Va’a Federation World Distance Championships were held in Samoa, August 10 to 19, and the Queen Lili (Lili’ukalani) race took place September 2.

The race in Hawaii is considered one of the largest long distance outrigger canoe races, attracting teams from all over the world.
