CONVENIENT RECYCLING: People with scrap tires will be able to turn them in at a collection event at Kal Tire on August 26.

qathet region residents will be able to turn in their scrap tires at an event planned for this purpose.

According to a media release, Tire Stewardship BC, a not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of scrap tires in BC, announced that it will be holding a scrap tire collection event in partnership with Western Rubber Products and Kal Tire from 9 am to 1 pm on August 26 at 7327 Duncan Street.

“Tire Stewardship BC is looking forward to once again partnering with Kal Tire and Western Rubber Products to provide the residents of Powell River with an easy, convenient and environmentally friendly way to return their scrap tires,” stated Rosemary Sutton, executive director, Tire Stewardship BC. “Recycled rubber from scrap tires is extremely versatile and can be made into many new safe and durable products such as playground surfaces, water parks and animal mats. Every year in BC, over five million scrap car tires are recycled into new products.”

The release stated that since 1991, more than 100 million tires have been recycled in BC, and TSBC’s scrap tire recycling program is one of the most successful in North America, and the oldest recycling program in Canada.

“Products made from BC scrap tires are produced and available right here in BC,” stated Sutton. “Using locally sourced and locally made products makes sense for many reasons. For example, it reduces the carbon footprint by avoiding GHG emissions in transportation and new production, and it creates local BC jobs.”
