Peak receives trio of national awards

Results of the 2023 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards competition were announced on September 15.

Peak staff have been recognized with Canadian Community Newspaper Awards (CCNAwards) in multiple categories. News Media Canada announced results of the 2023 CCNAwards competition on September 15.

The prestigious annual awards program features 27 unique categories honouring outstanding editorial, photography, multimedia and overall excellence in community newspaper publishing. The 2023 winners were selected from work published in 2022.

The Peak was awarded third place in General Excellence (circulation of 1,500 to 6,499) for Best All-Round Newspaper behind The Eastern Graphic in Montague, Prince Edward Island (first), and The Carillon in Steinbach, Manitoba (second).

In the Best News Story category, (circulation up to 9,999), Peak reporter Paul Galinski placed second for “Powell River fishery officer details freeing of tangled whale,” which was published in October of 2022. Nicole Buffie of The Carillon finished first while Lisa Gervais of The Highlander in Haliburton, Ontario, placed third.

The Peak was also recognized in the Best Special Section category (circulation up to 9,999), with a second place finish for its Taste magazine, behind The World-Spectator in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, and ahead of Alberni Valley News from Port Alberni, BC.
