Photography course to start in fall

Brooks students will have access to a new creative class

Secondary school students in Powell River will be able to take a photography course starting in September.

The course was developed locally by photographer Jennifer Kennedy. Jay Yule, School District 47 superintendent of schools, said the course will be implemented in fall 2012.

“What happens is a template goes out,” he explained at a recent meeting of Powell River Board of Education. “Teachers will need to discuss it with the principal. Then they write this outline as to what the objectives would be. As soon as we pass the motion it becomes a course so students now will be able to take that course next year.”

It is a grade 11 course that will be available at Brooks Secondary School. The course synopsis states: “This class concentrates on many areas of photography: technical skills, creativity, composition, computer/digital imaging and alternative processes. Critical to the course are: control of photo equipment and techniques, experimentation, visual communication, problem solving and portfolio development.”

The six-unit course is worth four credits and requires 120 hours to complete. The six units cover history of photographs, camera mechanics, image composing, digital manipulation, visual communication and the future of photography.
