Powell River RCMP reported the following for October 5 to 12, 2022.

Total calls for service: 112

October 5; Highway 101, south
At 1:16 pm, Powell River RCMP received a complaint of a possible impaired driver southbound on Highway 101. The complainant reported that a white Volvo was swerving in its lane and going over the centre line. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver produced his bank cards instead of his driver’s licence and had physical symptoms of impairment. As the driver exited the vehicle, a naloxone kit was observed on the floor. The driver admitted to smoking fentanyl earlier in the day. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and the vehicle was searched. Fentanyl was located in the vehicle. The driver submitted to a drug recognition expert exam and the vehicle was towed. Charges are pending while police await forensic lab analysis.

October 5; Joyce Avenue, 4700 block
Powell River RCMP responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in the 4700 block of Joyce Avenue. Police attended and located the vehicle parked, with the driver reclined in the driver seat. While speaking with police, the driver slurred his words, had large watery eyes, and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The driver was detained for roadside field sobriety testing and shortly thereafter, arrested for impaired driving. Charges are pending forensic lab analysis.

October 6; Alberni Street, 7100 block
At 1:55 am, police received a complaint of a male who forced open the outdoor storage area of Save-On-Foods. RCMP attended and the male suspect had departed the scene. Police patrolled the area and located the suspect male hiding behind an electrical box near RONA. The male was arrested and transported to cells pending investigation. He was later released on an undertaking to appear in Powell River Provincial Court on December 13, 2022, for charges of mischief and theft.  

October 8; Highway 101, south
At 2:10 pm, police responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Maitland Road. On arrival, police observed a vehicle in the ditch that had struck a power pole, with extensive front end damage. The power pole was damaged and power lines were downed across the highway causing a safety hazard. The driver admitted to police that he had been driving the vehicle with no insurance. Police issued a Motor Vehicle Act violation ticket for no insurance and wrong number plate. BC Hydro attended to secure the power lines.
