RAPID ACTION: Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a fire at Mapleview Estates in Townsite, with residents playing a pivotal role in making sure the fire did not spread.

Quick action by residents and the fire department contained a fire to one apartment unit in Townsite on October 11.

According to a media release from deputy fire chief Rocky Swanson, at 7:15 pm, Powell River Fire Rescue (PRFR) responded to a commercial alarm at 5650 Maple Avenue. The incident involved a room and contents fire that was effectively contained to one apartment on the third floor of the Mapleview Estates, stated Swanson.

“Remarkably, residents in an adjacent apartment displayed quick thinking, utilizing a dry chemical extinguisher to efficiently suppress the fire, greatly assisting our firefighting efforts,” stated Swanson.

“Sixteen dedicated members from PRFR, including both career and auxiliary personnel, arrived on the scene within minutes, supported by two colleagues from emergency health services. As a result of this incident, residents of the affected apartment needed to stay elsewhere for one night. It's essential to note that this applies solely to the single apartment where the fire occurred.”

Swanson stated that after a thorough investigation, fire officials determined the fire's origin to be in the living room and classified it as accidental, unrelated to smoking.

“Such accidents are not uncommon, and we can assure the residents of the apartment complex that there is no further threat to their safety,” stated Swanson. “I want to take this opportunity to urge anyone who may have inhaled smoke during the incident to seek immediate medical attention. Even minor smoke inhalation can have serious health consequences and should be treated with utmost care.”

Swanson stated that he encourages all residents of Powell River to ensure that their smoke detectors are functioning correctly, and to have a working fire extinguisher readily available. These simple precautions can make a significant difference in emergency situations, he stated.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all the residents and staff of the apartment complex for their extraordinary efforts during this fire,” stated Swanson. “Their quick response and positive attitude exemplify the spirit of our community. Thank you.

“Lastly, it's important to commend the apartment management for their outstanding efforts in ensuring that the firefighting equipment and alarm systems within the apartment were in excellent condition. Their diligence played a pivotal role in managing this situation effectively."
